Kua Number

By superimposing the luo shu magic square onto the later heaven bagua, we obtain an associated number for each of the eight trigrams or kuas. This number is known as the kua number.

How the Kua number for each of the 8 trigrams of the Bagua was derived using the Luo Shu magic square numbers

In 8 mansions theory, each person or house belongs to one of the eight kuas. To find out which kua the person or house belongs to, you need to compute the kua number.

Kua Number Formula

  1. Add the last 2 digits of the Year of Birth (based on the Chinese solar calendar)
  2. If the result is greater than 10, add the two digits until you get a single digit number.
  3. For males, subtract this number from 10. For females, add 5. The result is the kua number.
  4. If born on or after the year 2000, males subtract from 9 (instead of 10) and females add 6 (instead of 5).
Example

For a male born on 4th March 1976:

  1. The last two digits of his date of birth is 7 and 6
  2. 7 + 6 = 13
  3. 1 + 3 = 4
  4. Kua Number = 10 - 4 = 6
